Lighting designer/director Ali Bale had no hesitation in specifying an Avolites Pearl Expert console to control lighting for the current Kings of Leon “Only By The Night” tour. Bale is a big Avolites fan and has used Avo consoles for the last 15 years.

He’s worked for KOL for the last four and a half years, since he was originally asked onboard by co-LD and the show’s creative designer Paul Normandale. This latest tour is a co-lighting design between the two of them, on which Bale is also working extremely closely with video director Phil Woodhead and live visuals director & Catalyst digital media server programmer and operator, Phil Haynes.

Dave Parry of Most Technical specified 3 Avolites consoles for control and Robe moving lights throughout for his spectacularly innovative visual and sonic concept at the new 2500 capacity London superclub, matter.

Parry was asked onboard by matter owners and underground music gurus Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie with whom he’s worked on previous projects. He collaborated closely with architects and interior designers Pentagram who created an edgy neo industrial aesthetic for the venue which is inside the O2 in Greenwich.

Its neutral colouration and cool concrete, stone and opaque metal surfaces all ideally lent themselves to colour changing LED illumination, and the basis of Parry’s lighting scheme is closely related to colour, sonic and rhythmic psychologies that induce trance and hypnotic states in humans …. Allowing them to attain maximum enjoyment from the music and environment.

An Avolites Pearl Expert console is on tour with Paul Weller - specified by LD Pip Rhodes.

When Weller told Rhodes he wanted the show to be operated ‘live’, rather than pre-programmed or replayed in a cue list style, this seemed an ideal opportunity to road-test the new console, which is designed for even more flexible ‘hands-on’ operation than the original Pearl.

“He wanted a real authentic ‘feel’ thing going on with the lighting, in line with his music” explains Rhodes, who is very happy to run the show in this spontaneous manner.

Rhodes has always been an Avolites fan – and the Pearl has always been the ultimate ‘live’ operational desk. The start of the Weller tour coincided with the launch of the Pearl Expert which is packed with additional live operational features …… and so Rhodes thought this was an ideal opportunity to thoroughly road test the desk.

Theatre playback offers overall Master Level and separate control for In fade, Out fade and LTP fades. Multiple timed cues within cue lists all containing text legends and notes. Cues can Autoload other playbacks and run macros to configure the console. Theatre controls include Go, Stop and Fade Reverse functions.
