Tim Smith - a brief history

About LD:

How did you start out in the business?
From a secondary school age I was involved in local events, school performances, always from a sound angle, i then left school at 16 and found a job with a local AV company, working as tea boy gaining experience until moving to the south west England and freelancing ever since

What was your first show as the Lighting Designer?
I think it was a week after my Pearl Training, working for an AV company. Designing a corporate fashion show rig, with a few movers for glitz!!

What do you like best about your kind of work?
It has to be the summer, festivals.. and all the people you get to meet along the way!

What is the most difficult or challenging aspect of being an LD?
Never having enough strobes!!

What has been your biggest high so far?
It has to be Glastonbury 2009, getting to design the park main and BBC introducing stages along with many other venues and bars

What’s been the strangest brief/tour so far and why?
Taking a ground support / lighting rig to the French alps for 10days, in 1 arctic with little to no spares and a handful of crew! It seemed a little impossible!

Which performer/what event would you most like to work on/with and why?
It would have to be U2, a favourite band of mine for years, and the endless budget for more lights and toys!!

How long have you been using Avo consoles?/When did you first use an Avo product?
I can remember playing with them at plaza aged14/15 but clearly remember being able to use one at the end of a training day with Lindsey! I think I went to a corporate event the next day and used a pearl 2000

Which is your preferred console and why?
Its has to be the D4 for its ability to put anything anywhere! And the fact it just looks impressive!

What is your favourite feature of the console?
Play back modes... mode 2 brought a whole new world to me!!

Brief portfolio/CV of work?
Vasity 2009 – Tignes, French Alps (Pendulm Dj’s / Chase & Status Dj’s)
Glastonbury 2009 – LD Park Main / BBC Introducing / Bars

Mumford and Sons...Foo Fighters..

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Xbox 360… and lazing about!

Last Album bought?
Mumford and sons – No More

Favourite festival or gig/show and why?
Its just amazing!! And I love to have an Avo desk.. at Glastonbury!!

What three things couldn’t you live without while on tour/at gig?
Iphone...coffee....fresh socks

Have you ever been star struck and by who?
Weirdly enough I never do, but at an awards ceremony for wildlife television I met David Attenborough, who for some reason I was in awe of!
