Sam Morgan - a brief history
Featured Avo LD - February 2008

(1) How did you first start in the business ?
When I was 13 I had to find a place to do a week’s Work Experience, I’d always wanted to learn more about lighting so set out on finding somewhere that would take me in for a week. I was given a week’s work experience with Fineline in Bristol, I loved every second of it and was upset when the week ended. I carried on helping out at Fineline whenever I could until eventually I was taken on Full Time.

(2) What attracted you to it ?
I was always fascinated by seeing lighting used in different ways, how somebody could change the whole feel of anything just with lights amazed me…… I had to learn how!!!

(3) What, when, where was your first professional LD show and what did it involve kit wise ?
My 1st Professional LD show was “That’ll be the Day” and I have now been on tour with the show for over 6 years. Three years ago I was asked if I would like to design the lighting and I jumped at the chance.

When I first designed the show we were using an Avo Pearl 2000 with ART 2000 dimmers, I have now changed my Desk to a Pearl Expert!!

I also originally had lots of Par Cans and scrollers to play with and 6 Martin Mac 500’s which have now been replaced by 6 Robe ColorSpot 575E AT’s

(4) When did you start using Avo products ?
During my time at Fineline, I would prep kit going out on jobs and everything had to be tested so I was always behind a Pearl/Azure to test the kit (Desk/Dims/Movers)

(5) What’s your most challenging/demanding/enjoyable lighting project to date - and why ?
Definitely That’ll be the Day. The show is constantly changing and that means the lighting has to as well. The most challenging/enjoyable project has to be part of the current show, I had the challenge of lighting a piece which involves 4 drummers all being lit from different angles, I have had to fit lamps inside of the drums to up-light them, the end result is brilliant.

(6) What do you like best about your work?
Waking up everyday in a different place, the challenge of making the show fit on the largest and smallest stages, I also really enjoy it when we tour abroad. We have taken the show to Denmark and Germany several times.

(7) What were the last 2 albums you downloaded or bought ?
Reverend and The Makers – The State of Things
The Freestylers – A Different Story, Vol 1

(8) Who would you most like to see live ?
I would love to See The Killers live!! What a band!! I watched them perform at Glastonbury (on the TV, I was touring at the time) and wished I was stood in that crowd!

(9) Which artist/what event would you most like to light ?
Anything with a challenge!! Recently saw Jeff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” Live and was amazed at the lighting (LD Steve Nolan) and automation. Something where the lighting is the show!!!

(10) What advice would you would give to an aspiring young Sam Morgan ?
To see more gigs on days off!!!!
