| About LD: How did you start out in the business? I was a theatre LD and I read the New York ballet had bought some colour mixing fixtures for their front of house. (Martin PAL). I wanted to bring this to uk theatre + went on to learn moving light technology with LSD ICONs, I ended up freelancing, theatre, TV and R+R before realising I had my own company to run. What was your first show as the Lighting Designer? Probably a fringe theatre show, my first show with moving lights was on a pearl + was the launch of THX surround sound for George Lucas at Planet Hollywood. What do you like best about your kind of work? The variety and the constant discovery of new technology. What is the most difficult or challenging aspect of being an LD? The variety and the constant learning of new technology and then making a profit. What has been your biggest high so far? Standing back from the Bt tower and seeing we had lit it. What’s been the strangest brief/tour so far and why? To light the national forest at Westonbirt. Just the scale of it was a challenge, the weather was appalling and the distances covered were colossal. Which performer/what event would you most like to work on/with and why? I am keen on lighting Faskally Woods in Scotland and I am currently looking for interesting buildings with a view to light/video installations. My current mission is to be more creative with light. As far as live artists are concerned I am more interested in clients that are seeking to push boundaries and create something new and astounding rather than individuals. In my corporate work I have pointed a light at most of my heroes in music and acting at some time, however there are many artists I would love to work with. How long have you been using Avo consoles?/When did you first use an Avo product? I’ve used Avo dimmers as long as I can remember + have used Avos since the pearl came out. I remember the transition well from whole hog 1, I had desk number 8 and coincidently I have pearl expert number 8 too now. I guess I must have been using Pearls for at least 15 years; I was certainly using the first software releases and can remember programming without shapes and so forth. Which is your preferred console and why? I loved my pearl classic + we still use it here, I never really got on with the Azures. The pearl Titan has fitted directly into our inventory + is already my favourite; it is still an adventure which I am enjoying very much. inventory + is already my favourite; it is still an adventure which I am enjoying very much. What is your favourite feature of the console? The on board cache is a blessed relief, I love the split roller. It is early days for us but the transition has been seamless, at the moment every gig is an adventure & a revelation. Best tip ever given to you about being an L,D? Or what tip would you offer? If you want it more than anyone else then you will have it. Light the subject first, then the fancy stuff. Brief portfolio/CV of work I haven’t had one for 20 years or so, but clients include: Mercedes, McLaren F1, Peugeot, Kerrang awards, Mojo Honours List, HMV, Waterstones, Los Vagueness, The Doll, The Forestry Commission, National Trust, Q awards, Empire awards, Glastonbury Shangri-La, and loads more. Getting to Know You: What tunes are you currently listening to? Greek kids songs, pink Floyd, Ian Dury and whatever they play in the warehouse What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? Sneaking time off to go fishing and spending money on kit. Last Album bought? It was a recent purchase of A Patti Smith collection Favourite festival or gig/show and why? Glastonbury, it gives me something to moan about all year, love it and hate it. What three things couldn’t you live without while on tour/at gig? A shower, a mobile phone and a car. Have you ever been star struck and by who? Mick Jones, he’s started big beats in dance music as far as I’m concerned Ike Turner – I’d thought he was dead and bizarrely Frances del la Tour after seeing her perform re Joyce in the west end |
