James Campbell - a brief history

About LD:

How did you start out in the business?

I fell into it rather than chose it while I was attending Loughborough University. I worked as lightings designer under the watchful eye of our tech manager Paul Moss and the rest is, as they say, is history.

What was your first LD show?
It’s hard to say. I learnt my trade through doing bits and pieces at my universities student union. As more events came my way the more I got involved with the scene.

What do you like best about your kind of work?
It’s not an office job! The creative part allows some freedom, but the best part is when all the unconnected tasks and arrangements finally come together to put on the show.

How long have you been using Avo consoles? When did you first use an Avo product?
I first used them while studying and since then I’ve always used them. Although I’ve played with other consoles, for me, none have really compared. – especially when working with the Pearl Expert and the Touch Wing due out as there will be much more at your fingertips.

Which is your preferred console?
Usually the Expert because of the amount of playbacks. It also made life easier for this particular event as I had a number of fixtures to control.

What is the most difficult aspect of being an LD and why?
Working out what to do! From concept to completion the most worrying thing for me is how best to fulfil and interpret the clients brief.

What’s been the strangest brief/tour so far?
Someone once asked me for black lights.

What has been your biggest high so far?
The Festivals while working with VME. Sometimes you can feel a little thrown in at the deep, so when it all comes together and I pull it off it’s a good feeling.

Which performer/what event would you most like to work on/with?
I would love to work on a Muse gig! Apart from loving the band their lighting style is really theatrical and dramatic. I’d like to think there would be a lot of freedom to play with ideas and have some fun.

Best tip ever given to you about being an LD? Or what tip would you offer?
Less is more! So often it’s true. If there is too much going on then there is plenty more that can go wrong and you won’t achieve a coherent look.

Getting to Know You:

What tunes are currently listening to?
Biffy Clyro

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Cheesy pop, but nothing like Britney Spears or anything.

Last Album bought?
I’ve just bought Biffy Clyro’s and Muse’s latest albums

Favourite festival/gig?
Glastonbury.

What three things couldn’t you live without while on tour/at gig?
Laptop, Caffeine and my Avo consoles

Have you ever been star struck and by who?
Kasabian. while I was still at Uni I went across to Leicester to help at a show. I was sitting reading an article in the paper on them when out the corner of my eye I saw this guy walk in and ask to borrow my paper, which I thought nothing of until I looked up to see one of the band members looking back at me. It was like a something from a film.
