Haydn Cruickshank, founder and
Managing Director of West London Lighting
Rental Company, Colour Sound Experiment.
A company small enough to give face to face personal service but
large enough, and with an impressive inventory to service large
scale tours, festivals and events.
AVO: How did you first start in the
business?
Haydn: I first started lighting aged 16 with a few old
slide projectors and a broken strobe light for a local psychedelic
rock band.
AVO: What attracted you to it?
Haydn: It was fun and people gave me money to do it.
AVO: What, when, where was your first
professional LD show and what did it involve kit wise?
Haydn: 1989.
Difficult to say, I only ever worked on my own shows, put the kit
up, LD’d, operated etc.
I gradually built up my kit, buying Optikinetics Solar 250s,
strobes, a few old PAR cans & a desk with a diode pin patch.
When the rave thing took off, I bought some Golden Scans and
everything stepped up a gear.
AVO: When did you start using Avo products?
Haydn: Avo products, a bit later in life.
I first bought a Pearl in about 1999, and gradually added them to
hire stock.
I now have 9 Pearls, we also have ART2000 dimmer racks.
AVO: What’s your most
challenging/demanding/enjoyable lighting project to date - and why?
Haydn: So many, but highlights have been Underworld (& still is),
Megadog tours / festivals, Levis 150th Birthday, Lynx @ Jodrell
Bank.
AVO: What do you like best about your work?
Haydn: The variety of different roles involved.
Flashing lights on & off, buying new kit, loading trucks etc
AVO: What were the last 2 albums you
downloaded or bought?
Haydn: Probably downloaded some old fashioned acid house music &
Glen Miller
AVO: Who would you most like to see live?
Haydn: David Copperfield
AVO: Which artist/what event would you most
like to light?
Haydn: A Busby Berkley show
AVO: What advice would you would give to an
aspiring young Haydn Cruickshank?
Haydn: Get a proper job!
