| How did you start out in the
business? Selling t-shirts for a friend’s band for £20 a day, not including days off. I got asked to switch on a strobe at a certain point in the set and I never sold t-shirts again. What was your first show as the Lighting Designer? The Delays’ UK tour 2003 at Wolverhampton Wolfrun. I plugged the DMX loop the wrong way around and placed all the fixtures in the wrong order on stage. Andi Lycett knows what I’m talking about. What do you like best about your kind of work? Literally turning my dreams into reality. What is the most difficult or challenging aspect of being an LD? The short gap between getting out of bed and drinking the first cup of coffee. What has been your biggest high so far? Too many to mention, but Band of Horses at Red Rocks was pretty special. It was also actually physically very high up. What’s been the strangest brief/tour so far and why? Once got asked not to use steam. Fine I said. I went and switched on the hazer. Which performer/what event would you most like to work on/with and why? Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense, and Daft Punk - my two biggest inspirations. How long have you been using Avo consoles? When did you first use an Avo product? Since I started on the toilet circuit, 6 years. They kept popping up all over the place so I taught myself as I went along. I love them like a brother. Which is your preferred console and why? Diamond 4. It lets me put whatever I want wherever I want. What is your favourite feature of the console? It’s bigger than the sound desk that was on the last tour I did. And it worked better! Best tip ever given to you about being an LD? Or what tip would you offer? Watch the drummer. Don’t use colour scrolls. Be nice to everyone. Silly Questions: What tunes are you currently listening to? Bowie: Station to Station Outkast: The Love Below The XX: XX The Maccabees: Wall of Arms What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? Playing FIFA until early morning. Last Album bought? Cocteau Twins: Four Calendar Cafe Favourite festival or gig/show and why? Anything in Japan. They are masters of perfection. What three things couldn’t you live without while on tour/at gig? Moulded earplugs, a Kurt Vonnegut book, 3 bottles of water Have you ever been star struck and by who? David Bowie once walked past me. I had to sit down for 10 minutes afterwards. |
