Dave Gibbon, Gibbo as he's universally known throughout the industry, is one of the genuine characters and 'nice guys' of the business. Clichéd but true!
A run of tours including the 1993 Rollercoaster tour where he met fellow party animal and LD Dave Byars who was LD'ing Blur. They immediately bonded. Byars asked him to come out on the upcoming Blur Modern Life Is Rubbish tour as rigger and moving light operator - another rung up the lighting ladder and another challenge!
The tour received plenty of critical acclaim and gave Gibbo valuable hands-on experience.
In 1995, Gibbo first worked for The Charlatans - initially as a dimmer person and rigger. His brother was monitor engineer and production manager and when their previous LD left to fulfil commitments with another artist, he put Dave up for the job. Many have cried nepotism, but Gibbo dismisses this as "Total bollox". He completed his first tour as their LD and hit off a very positive aesthetic and social rapport with the band.
In 1998 he became LD for The Divine Comedy, which ran for most of 98 and really stretched him artistically.
Recently he has been LD'ing for corporate events and fashion shows. This has included the UK Lingerie Awards in Harrogate. He has also
programmed and operated the Aida aftershow VIP launch party at Roselands in New York. He's learned that a lot of the speed and quick thinking of rock 'n' roll can be utilised for corporate work if it's presented in modified format "Turning down the volume a bit" as he puts it.
