| How did you start out in the
business? I started out by doing warehouse work and crewing at shows for local production companies, shortly after I finished my A-levels. What was your first show as the Lighting Designer? I think it would have been for the GWR music concert at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta in August 2006. What do you like best about your kind of work? Having the opportunity to travel to some amazing places, getting to work at some brilliant gigs and festivals and constantly meeting new people. What has been your biggest high so far? I think it would be have to be elbow’s homecoming gig at the MEN this September. What’s been the strangest brief/tour so far and why? The strangest brief I’ve ever had would probably be when I was asked to illuminate a field of giant carrots… Although saying that - I think the strangest gig I’ve ever done, would have to be when we turned up to do a show at a very expensive private party in the Ukraine and we discovered during the load out that there had been snipers tracking our every move from the roof of the venue throughout the day! How long have you been using Avo consoles?/When did you first use an Avo product? Avo were the first consoles I learnt to use – I can’t remember the first time I used one but I’ve been using Avo consoles consistently since I started out doing lighting… Which is your preferred console and why? My preferred console is the Diamond 4 Elite - I think it’s one of the best desks for busking and quickly producing a show when programming time is tight. It’s versatile and straightforward to use and is full of handy features. I prefer the Elite to the Vision because the more compact size makes it easier to tour. What is your favourite feature of the console? I find the individual attribute fade times really handy for certain applications such as programming video content. Best tip ever given to you about being an LD? Or what tip would you offer? I was stood in front of a ridiculously large rig at a heavy metal festival and another LD once said to me: “ There is no such thing as ‘less is more’… More is always more otherwise they wouldn’t have invented the word!”- At that moment it seemed rather apt! Just for Fun: What tunes are currently listening to? Loads! I’ve just discovered Spotify and the joy of having access to almost everything all of the time! What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? Cider. Favourite festival or gig/show? I think it would have to be Glastonbury – I’ve been working there in one capacity or another since I was 14, it’s our local festival and I have so many memories of different Glastonbury experiences… otherwise it would have to be Exit Festival in Serbia… I’ve never experienced a party like it! What three things couldn’t you live without while on tour/at gig? My i-pod, fresh coffee and Worcester sauce. Have you ever been star struck and by who? I’m not sure… I know there are definitely a few people who would leave me completely star struck but don’t think I’ve met them yet…(nor do I think I probably ever will!) |
