Avolites Shake Things up at Reverb
2nd -31st January 2010

Back Up Next
Fans of alternative music were in for a treat this January as the Roundhouse, Camden, played host to this years Reverb Festival. With many genre busting acts and collaborations, our Avo highlights were Beggars Opera: Reborn and Ziz Zazou which, on both counts, proved to be an inarguably spectacular and eccentric series of shows. The lighting fixtures, supplied by PRG, were controlled by the in-house Pearl Expert.
The design catered for an eclectic line-up, ranging from a barroc trio to a full drum and base version of the Beggars Opera and collectively they were commissioned to introduce classical contemporary music to a younger audience. Anders, Head of Lighting at the Roundhouse, commented: ‘the rig had to be capable of looking like a large-scale rock gig, yet cater for orchestras and be inconspicuous’.
The cherry on the cake was to acquire Anders’ ‘dream wish list’ of lighting gear. Just as well as he had to take into account, the huge differences in the festivals acts. The Roundhouse’s ironwork and wooden features were lit by 18 VL5’s and 4 colour blasts, 4 overhead trusses included a further 18 VL5’s, 6 VL1000TS, 18 Pixelpars, 30 colour changers, 12 Mac 2000 profiles and 6 VL6’s. 4 x10K Fresnels were on dropped T-bars bars and 140-ish generic fixtures.
Following a successful run at the 2009 Edinburgh fringe festival, nine mastermind musicians/mechanics brought their explosive feast of skills fit for both eyes and ears - better known to you and I as Ziz Zazou. In a somewhat mangled musing of literal ear bashing music they crashed, banged and walloped their way through unexpected day-to-day objects to bring music to a sweet harmonious surrender. An amusing comedy show crossed with theatre and music made it, in all, a very merry evening.
Steeped in London’s street music history, Beggars Opera couldn’t have been in a more perfect venue to be ‘reborn’. Performed by an eclectic cast of artists, including Goldfrapp’s Charlie Jones, the songs were revived for today’s audiences. From a show which paid homage to the collassol financial corruption within high society, today’s situation makes it inevitably hugely relevant.
