Avolites in Editorial Control

Back Up Next

An Avolites Diamond 4 has been in control of lighting for the latest UK leg of The Editors world tour, featuring a design by Bryan Leitch, with the show being operated by Chris Steel.

It’s Steel’s desk of choice for many reasons, primarily because “Everything is right there in front of you where you need it, the desk has a massive amount of power and it’s very easy to programme”.

The “End Has A Start” tour has been ongoing since 2007, and the basic concept of a very contemporary lighting and video show design is modified and morphed slightly between legs as the venue sizes also vary.

The UK leg played a selection of arenas, theatre and concert halls.

Running off the D4 were a variety of moving lights and generics positioned on four overhead trusses – a straight front truss, two mid trusses running diagonally along the sides and a back truss that flew in and out to reveal the screen at the appropriate moments.

The core moving lights were 16 SGM Giotto 400 Spot CYMs, 6 Giotto Wash 400s and 12 Martin Professional MAC 2K Washes distributed between the front and side trusses.

They had 8 Novalight High Grounds on the stage right and left mid trusses, used to create powerful searchlight effects.

On the floor were 8 SGM Palco 3 LED wash fixtures  and 5 Martin Atomic strobes with colour changers.

All this was controlled from the D4 Vision console, which also ran a PixelDrive mapping system providing content for a ColorWeb backdrop during the first part of the show. An Avolites Show Safe system was also running at FOH.

All lighting equipment was supplied by Siyan, along with crew chief  Andreas Atkinson, Nick Burlace and Jamie Thompson.

Steel has been a fan of Avo products for many years and it’s always his first choice of console for all types of shows. “You know exactly where you stand with an Avo desk” he confirms, “It’s just so great for improvising or ‘live’ operation and there’s plenty of headroom in all directions for operating really complex shows.”

The Editors finished up the UK tour and are now in Europe using local productions, with Steel taking his own Pearl Tiger console to run each system. For the Amsterdam Heineken Arena concert, he had another D4 and maximised the Fixture Exchange facility which enabled him to produce a similar show as the UK but using different moving lights.
