Avolites goes to Bollywood

Back Up Next
An Avolites Diamond 4 Elite lighting console is touring Australia with the theatrical dance spectacular, “Merchants of Bollywood” including a 16 week run at the Gold Coast’s Jupiters Casino.

UK based lighting designer, Ben Miller, has worked on the show since December 2007, taking over from original LD Liz Berry. Miller has over 25 years industry experience, and has used many Avo consoles throughout his career.

He operates the Merchant’s eclectic fusion of theatre, Bollywood glitz and rock ‘n’ roll in very much hands on style – and that’s why he likes the D4 - with 500 ish button presses per show – not including all the preloaded chases! Miller states “The Diamond 4 is a workhorse”, adding that the desk is ideal for creating the big, bold, colourful looks essential for the show’s megamix musical numbers.

The D4 is controlling a total of 50 Martin Professional moving lights, 8 High End Studio Beams, 12 Martin LD Stage bars, 24 Martin LC LED Panels, 2 Robe Faze 400FT haze machines, and 2 Le Maitre LSGs. The equipment for the Gold Coast production combines elements of Jupiters Casino’s house rig, supplemented with kit from Chameleon Touring Systems in Brisbane, including the Diamond 4.

Design wise, Miller programmes for two distinct components of the production. Firstly, the standard theatre sections of the show, which involve the direct delivery of dialogue to the audience. During these sections, lighting emphasizes the actors, and the look is clean and simple.

The musical and dance numbers are more dynamic, involving plenty of movement and colour. Miller spent considerable time studying classic Bollywood movies so he could create authentic looks and combinations of complex patterns and vibrant colours. He paid particular attention to the costumes, using changes as cues for the lighting to change, enhancing and complimenting this essential element of the canvass.

The Merchants of Bollywood storyline charts the history of the world’s largest and most prolific film industry with its dynasties of stars and fundamental role in the heart and soul of Indian society.

It hits Australia following a sell out international tour which incorporated London, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Geneva.
