Declan O’Rourke performs on the Acoustic Stage (lighting run by 2 x Avo Diamond 4 Elites)

Avolites once again proved it was the most popular festival console of choice at Glastonbury, with numerous desks used to run lighting in a huge variety of areas across the site.

On the Acoustic stage, two Diamond 4 Elites were used by LD Rob Sangwell and programmed by Gary Churchill. They were running Martin MAC 2K Profiles, 2K Performances, 2K Washes, 550s and 250 Entours. The Acoustic stage also used Avolites dimming for its conventional fixtures and Avo DMX buffer boxes. All lighting gear was supplied by Fineline.

Gary Churchill comments, “The D4 is great. I have used it before a couple of times but here I’ve really had a chance to put the desk through its paces. I like the wide choice of faders and the fact that you can put any playback anywhere you like and have direct access to all the fixtures onstage.” He added that the Elite was also a handy size, and could easily be moved by one person and lifted by two.

Highlights on the Acoustic stage included The Beautiful South, Martha Wainwright, Steve Earle, Alison Moorer, Declan O’Rourke and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.

A Fine Choice

In addition to the Acoustic, Fineline also supplied lighting for the Jazz World Stage, designed by Kris Lundberg, who chose an Avo Sapphire console for his control platform. His moving lights were High End Studio Beams, PC Beams and 250s plus conventionals

Other Fineline supplied stages included the Circus tent, where LD James Loudon again used an Avolites Pearl. This was also programmed and operated by Avo Pearl owner Jan Osborne of Lampiez who was on Loudon’s crew for the duration.

In the Theatre tent – rapidly repaired after being badly damaged in the dramatic electrical storm preceding this year’s event - LD Hal Himsworth was in control with another Avolites Pearl. Over on the outdoor Circus Stage (aka Fire & Dance Stage), LD Andy Melony also utilised a Pearl as did Simon Johnson in the Cabaret tent.

And Also

In addition to the above Fineline-supplied stages, in the Budweiser Crown tent, LD’s Nick Jevons and Phil Winward of Electric Fly Productions used an Avolites Pearl 2004 for their stage and tent design that included 17 James Thomas Pixellines, 5 PixelPAR 90s, 16 Martin MAC 250s and 300s and a bunch of conventionals.

In the Dance Area, the East Dance Tent featured another Avolites Diamond 4 Elite console. Lighting for both East and West Dance tents was supplied by Colour Sound Experiment, designed by Jasper Johns.

Operator/programmers in the East Tent were Nathan Matthews and Andy Walton, and lighting fixtures here included – on the moving front - Martin 2Ks and Robe Color Spot 1200 AT and ColorWash 1200 ATs, and non moving lights included JTE Pixellines. Kicking performances abounded including James Lavelle, Timo Maas, Darren Emerson, Freestylers, the Chemical Brothers and oodles more.

Other Avolites Glasto 2006 hot-spots included the Leftfield Tent, which featured a Sapphire; LD’d by James Thompson and Jaz Bhullar from the Astoria, with equipment supplied by Siyan, and the Roots Tent where LD Mikey Ray specified another Avo Pearl 2004. Lights were from Colour Sound Experiment.

Coldplay

Coldplay, Saturday’s Pyramid Stage headliners brought in their own touring Avo Diamond 4 Vision console (supplied by Siyan), run by LD Nick Whitehouse, with additional lighting operation by Coldplay’s show director Bryan Leitch. Chris Martin’s acclaimed performance included a rousing rendition of Kylie’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” in honour of the absent Pop Princess, due to top the Sunday night bill before having to pull out for medical reasons.

Avolites’ Steve Warren, Ben Miles, Chris Steel and Nick Forro were also on site to enjoy the great vibes, and help everyone party on happily, regardless of the super-squelchy mud in their own little Glasto worlds!
