Lighting designer Glenn Wade and lighting director Paul Dexter chose an Avolites Diamond III console to control the massive lighting rig Glenn designed for the live show shots in the up-coming Warner Brothers movie Metal God (the working title). The movie, scheduled for release at the end of the year, stars Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston.
Metal God is set in the mid eighties - when heavy metal fever was at dizzy heights - and size mattered - particularly the size of one's lighting rigs!!
The Diamond III was controlling 1200 pars, 15 Studio Colors, 15 Studio Spots, 24 Dataflash strobes, 120 colour changers and twenty-two 9-lites in a metal-tastic array of three circular trusses in the roof and a 'wall of death' upstage, plus further onstage and under-stage lighting.
While the Diamond III is not period, its traditional preset fader configuration - with a fader per channel, always a popular feature with Avo consoles - gave it a highly authentic mid eighties feel. At that time, the Avolites QM500 console - one of the first sophisticated memory lighting desks and predecessor of the modern Avo consoles - reigned supreme.
Paul Dexter comments that the power and accessibility of the Diamond III was invaluable for the Metal God shoot. "The 5-page selection function was great for the methodical filing of groups of lighting and effects into categories. When a specific page was selected, the tools of that category were revealed on the faders!. Simple and effective!"
All lighting equipment of the live concert scenes - filmed in the LA Sports Arena - was supplied by Entertainment Lighting Services (ELS) from North Hollywood.
